For once, there is good news all round. Despite the dismal economic climate of late, new research shows that the seaside tourism industry in Britain continues to go from strength to strength. The substantial sector, which is directly responsible for significant employment both in direct employment and in associated supply industries, has not only survived the global recession, but is indeed flourishing.
Research was carried out by Sheffield Hallam University and over one hundred and twenty seaside towns were examined. The report indicates that the industry contributed over three billion pounds to the UK economy each year and that it supported over one thousand jobs in each resort. Blackpool was, unsurprisingly, identified as being the largest concentrated job market within the industry, with a nineteen thousand strong workforce.
